WGSI HISTORY & PARTNERS

The Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI) - a partnership between Perimeter Institute for Theroetical Physics and the University of Waterloo - is a successful example of how two organizations can combine their strengths to work towards a better future. In forming WGSI, these two organizations are building upon a history of collaboration that has already given ruse to the successful Institute for Quantum Computing and the highly regarded Perimeter Scholars International.

At the 2009 launch of WGSI, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, then President of the University of Waterloo, and also the official Patron of the Equinox Summit: Energy 2030, said, "The growing complexities of our world require exceptionally clear thinking if we are to grow the knowledge economy and benefit the province and Canada. Taking a long term view is critical to spotting opportunities early in order to identify and sustain responsible social and economic development.”

At that same time, Neil Turok, Director of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, said, “Science and technology will be vital to our future. Through wise investments, Ontario and Canada are already emerging as global knowledge leaders. WGSI will help with identifying key challenges and opportunities, thereby ensuring the best possible decisions are taken.”
