Master's Student, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto
Afnan Naeem is currently a master’s student in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto specializing in the social & behavioural health sciences. Her work aims to address inequities and achieve health equity at both the community and systems levels, locally and globally. Lately, she completed her practicum with the World Health Organization in Geneva, working on monitoring action on the social determinants of health. Some other projects she has been involved with recently include refugee health, ecological determinants of health, and decent work & health.
Afnan feels a deep moral and ethical commitment to sustainable development and is driven by social justice, equity, critical thinking, empathy, and interdisciplinarity. “I think we must translate the message of the SDGs,” says Afnan, “we must effectively engage with ordinary Canadians and in our own communities.”
Seeking inspiration from her community, her parents, mentors, neighbours, and friends she’s made along the way, Afnan is always willing to learn from others and partake in ally-ship with communities and populations facing challenges. In her downtime she enjoys outdoor activities, the arts, writing poetry, and spending time with family.
